Belén, New Mexico,
ten miles south of Los Lunas is a railroad town. That's how it got its start, and it
still thrives because of it today. The Santa Fe railroad has
been a part of Valencia County's history since the 1880's. Trains owned by
Burlington Northern share the central switchyards at Belen too. Hauling frieght
north, south, east, and west. Some days, nearly 100 trains pass through the Belén
yard. It can be a busy place. Occaisionally, an Amtrak Vista Cruiser passes
through. If you like to watch trains, Belén is a great stop to make in your
travels.
